The 20-Minute Reset

A house in Lubbock does not get dirty the way a house in Dallas gets dirty. Ours gets dusty — fine caliche grit that comes in through window tracks, settles on blinds and fan blades, and turns into a film on every flat surface within about four days of a good wind. This is the routine that stays ahead of it, in about twenty minutes a day.

Every nightThe five-minute pass

Not cleaning — resetting. Do this after dinner and the house never gets far enough behind to need a Saturday.

• Every surface cleared: counters, table, the one chair that collects things
• Dishes in the machine or in the rack, sink wiped dry
• Shoes at the door — this alone cuts tracked-in grit by half
• One trash bag out if it's more than two-thirds full
• Throw pillows and blankets back where they live

Every morningFifteen minutes, one room

Rotate through the house one room at a time instead of trying to do the whole thing at once. Six rooms, six days, and every room gets real attention weekly.

• Dust high to low — fan blades, then shelves, then baseboards
• Wipe the light switch plate and the door handle in that room
• Run the vacuum along the edges, not just the middle
• Open a window for ten minutes if the wind isn't up

Every weekThe four everyone forgets

Guests notice all four of these. Owners stop seeing them after about a month.

• Ceiling fan blades. Slide an old pillowcase over each blade and pull — the dust comes off inside the case instead of onto the bed.
• Window tracks. Vacuum first with a crevice tool, then wipe. Wiping first just makes mud.
• The front door and its frame. The first thing every visitor touches and looks at from six inches away.
• Baseboards in the entry and hallway. Traffic areas darken there long before anywhere else.

Hard waterWhat actually removes the spots

Lubbock water leaves mineral spotting on glass, chrome, and tile. Scrubbing harder doesn't work — the deposit is mineral, so it needs an acid, not more pressure.

• Plain white vinegar in a spray bottle, left to sit five to ten minutes before wiping
• For shower glass, a squeegee after every shower prevents more than any cleaner removes
• Never mix vinegar with bleach or with any product containing bleach
• Skip vinegar on natural stone, marble, and unsealed grout — it etches them

SeasonalFour times a year

• Replace or wash HVAC filters — every 30 days here, not the 90 on the box
• Vacuum refrigerator coils and wipe the door seals
• Wash blinds slat by slat, or take them down and rinse them outside
• Clean inside the oven and under the drip pans
• Wash pillows, mattress protectors, and the curtains nobody ever washes
